7th Century : Beginning of the Tripartite Struggle in North India
Many crib about dates, time and definitely history. So, I thought I would make History a little easier for you all through my posts here. Let us begin with Medieval Period.
Seventh Century. This is where the medieval period starts. The peculiarity of this period till 10th century atleast is that you shall find India divided among many kingdoms but no one was able to establish a strong Empire in this territory. In Seventh Century, we shall see the establishment of three kingdoms - Pratiharas, Palas and Rashtrakutas.
First empire was that of Rashtrakutas. Nobody knows when exactly the empire was established. We know that it was established by one Mr. Dandidurga. After, Dandidurga died, Krishna I came to power. Ever seen the Kailash Temple at Ellora?? It was built during his reign.
Krishna I was not only a patron to arts and music. He was braveheart too. He occupied the Konkan, Mysore and the kingdom of Vengi.
At that time (650 AD to be exact), there was a kingdom coming up near Rajasthan. Yes! all rajasthani folks should be paying more attention now :P. It is the kingdom of Pratiharas. It was founded by one Mr.(King) Harish Chandra. Now, he was much troubled by the super-strong Islamic Empire around Sind. But, before he could something big, he had died(730 AD). His son, Nagabhata I was very smart. He entered into a Triple Alliance with Mr. (King) Nagabhata fought the Battle of Rajasthan (738 AD) against all the super-strong Islamic Tribes. Let me tell you, it was super - duper war and he quashed the Muslim power. In fact, they didn't even bother entering our territory for a long time.
Now, around our Hoogly river, somebody else was coming into power. By 750 AD, the Pala Empire was formed under Gopala. It was established over Bengal and Magadha. Take a look at Pala Empire under Gopala.
The second ruler in the Pala Empire was Dharamapala who ascended the throne after twenty years (770 AD).
790 AD. Its time for seventh century to exit and the eighth century to dawn in. The changes was, in fact, palpable. The three empires, Pala, Pratiharas and Rashtrakutas, had started on their fights by now. Pratiharas were defeated by Rashtrakutas and they, for that moment, had to retreat to the deserts of Rajasthan. Nevertheless, Pratiharas were strong, I tell you. They conquered Kanauj and established a kingdom till Malwa and Berar. But, more powerful kings were yet to come in these kingdoms. Bigger fights were yet to come... And I think it is better to come in the next blogpost.
Good Night for now!
